Members arrived for Spoons on a slightly subdued note after hearing that the game versus Letterkenny had been called off. However, spirits lifted quickly when John rang the bell for cards, and the familiar morning buzz returned as the inevitable “who got what?” conversations got underway.

As teams made their way to their respective rinks, they quickly discovered they would not be playing alone. A particularly determined swarm of midges had also decided to turn up, attacking without mercy and adding an extra level of difficulty to proceedings. One player, attempting to swat them away with a white cloth, was promptly accused by Plunkett of “throwing in the towel” before a bowl had even been delivered.

Once play got underway, it soon became clear that the Red team on Rink 3 were setting the early pace and looked set to take a strong lead into the break. However, sport has a habit of rewriting its own script, and a spirited comeback from the Red team on Rink 4 saw them surge ahead in the closing stages, eventually finishing with a comfortable 5-point victory.

2nd place: Rattana & Oliver - 22 points

3rd place: Maureen G, Frank and Seamus F - 17 points

The silver spoons were then presented by Margaret to our worthy winners, bringing a fitting finish to a lively morning’s play that featured midges, good humour, and plenty of competitive spirit.
